Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Setup

These instructions will serve to help you configure Windows 95 to use the Internet through Crestar. You may need your Windows 95 installation disks (or CD).

PART A - Installing Dial-Up Networking

If you have the Internet Setup Wizard (included with pre-installed Windows 95 systems or with the Microsoft Plus! Pack), run it now by either double-clicking on the 'Internet' icon on your desktop or by clicking on 'Start | Run' and typing 'inetwiz'. This will greatly simplify your Internet installation. If you do not have this option, you may follow these instructions to install dial-up networking.

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon.
  3. Select the 'Windows Setup' tab.
  4. Double-click on 'Communications'.
  5. Make sure 'Dial-Up Networking' is checked. If it's not, check it now and click on OK, then OK again. If you are asked to enter a "Computer Name," enter unique values in each of the three fields "Computer Name," "Workgroup Name," and "Computer Description." After Setup finishes copying the files it needs, you will be asked to restart your computer. Do so.

PART B - Configuring Your Network

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the 'Network' icon.
You must have at least three items listed in order to connect to Crossroads. You need 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP'.
    If you're missing...
    • 'Dial-Up Adapter', click on Add, select 'Adapter' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Dial-Up Adapter' on the right. Click on OK.
    • 'Client for Microsoft Networks', click on Add, select 'Client' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Client for Microsoft Networks' on the right. Click on OK.
    • 'TCP/IP', click on Add, select 'Protocol' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'TCP/IP' on the right. Click on OK.
If you're on a Local Area Network (LAN), check with your local Network Administrator before attempting step 3. If you're computer is not on a local network, it's safe to proceed.
  3. If you have listed 'Client for Netware Networks', 'IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol' and/or 'NetBEUI', click on each one in turn and click on Remove to remove it.
  4. Double-click on 'Client for Microsoft Networks'.
  5. Make sure nothing is checked under 'Logon validation'. Under 'Network logon options', select 'Quick logon'. Click on OK.
  6. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Adapter'. Click on the 'Bindings' tab. Only 'TCP/IP' should be checked there. Click on OK.
  7. Double-click on 'TCP/IP'.
    Under the 'IP Address' tab,
    • Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
    Under the 'WINS Configuration' tab,
    • Select 'Disable WINS Resolution'.
    Under the 'Gateway' tab,
    • Make sure that the box under 'Installed Gateways' is empty.
    • If you have anything listed there, select it and click on Remove.
    Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab,
    • DNS should be disabled.
    • Click on OK.
    • Click on the 'Identification' tab. Make sure the fields for 'Computer Name' and 'Workgroup' are completed (they don't need to be anything particular, just filled in).
    • Click on OK. Restart your computer when you are asked to do so.

PART C - Creating Your Crestar Connection

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Networking'. If you aren't prompted to create your connection, double-click on 'Make New Connection'.

  4. Enter the area code and phone number for your Crossroads connection. Numbers are listed with your account information. Click on Next.
  5. Click on Finish.

PART D - Connecting to Crossroads

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Networking'.
  3. Double-click on your Crestar connection.
If you used the Internet Setup Wizard in part A to set up your dial-up networking, simply double-clicking on the Internet icon will do the same thing as the above three steps.
  4. Enter your login name as it appears in your account information.
  5. Enter your password exactly as it appears in your account information.
  6. Check to be sure that you are not entering ANY capital letters or punctuation marks of any kind.
  7. Verify that the phone number listed is exactly how you would normally dial it (i.e. no leading 9's or an area code where it should not be).
Some installations of Win95 will allow you to check the 'Save Password' field, which will allow you to connect to Crossroads in the future without having to re-enter your password. Normally, this option will become available after your first successful connection with Crossroads.

  8. Click on Connect. This will dial and connect you to the Internet. Once connected, you may then launch any Internet applications you have on your computer, or proceed to download a copy of the Microsoft Internet Explorer or the Netscape Navigator.

If you haven't installed Microsoft Internet Explorer via the Internet Setup Wizard, you may now want to install Microsoft Internet Explorer.
