Windows 98 Internet Connection Wizard

The following instructions are to serve in helping you set up Windows 98 for connection to the Internet with Crossroads Communications. You may need your Windows 98 CD(or diskettes) to complete the setup process.

Internet Connection Wizard

If you have just installed Windows 98, or have not set up any other Internet Connections, you may click on the desktop icon labeled "Internet Explorer" to get to the step 2.
  1. Click on 'Start | Programs | Internet Tools | Connection Wizard'.
  2. Select the second choice, "I have an existing Internet account...".
  3. Click Next.
  4. Select the first choice, "Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider...".
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the first choice, "Connect using my phone line".
  7. Click Next.
  8. If a message pops up and asks you to insert your Windows 98 CD, insert your CD and press OK. If your modem has not yet been installed, an "Install New Modem" screen will pop up. If your modem has already been installed, skip to step 13.
  9. Make sure "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from the list" is NOT checked. Press Next.
  10. Once your modem has been detected, verify the settings and click Next. If you get a message saying "Windows did not find any new modems..." click Next, and select your modem's brand name on the left, and your model on the right, then click Next.
  11. Enter in the appropriate information, and click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Enter in the appropriate Telephone number (click here) and click Next.
  14. Enter the user name and password. This is typically the first part of your email address, before the "@" (i.e. login_name@crcom.net, login_name is your user name). Click Next.
  15. Select Yes and click Next.
  16. Make sure PPP is selected and press Next.
  17. Make sure the first choice, "I don't need to type anything when logging on" is selected and click Next.
  18. Make sure "My Internet service provider..." is selected and click Next.
  19. Select "Always use the following". In the first box, DNS server, type in 69.55.192.5. In the second box, Alternate DNS server, type in 69.55.192.6. Click Next.
  20. Under Connection name, replace the contents with Crossroads Communications. Click Next.
  21. Select Yes and click Next to set up your Internet Mail Account.
  22. Select Create a new Internet mail account and click Next.
  23. Enter your full name (i.e. John Smith). Click Next.
  24. Enter your email address (login_name@crcom.net). Click Next.
  25. Make sure POP3 is selected from the drop down box. Under Incoming Mail, type in mail.crcom.net. Under Outgoing mail server, type in mail.crcom.net. Click Next.
  26. Make sure "Log on using" is selected and type in your user name for POP account name (i.e. login_name@crcom.net, login_name is the account name). Enter your password, and click Next.
  27. Verify the Internet mail account name box reads "mail.crcom.net". Click Next.
  28. Select Yes and click next to set up your Internet News Account.
  29. Enter your full name (i.e. John Smith). Click Next.
  30. Enter your email address (login_name@crcom.net). Click Next.
  31. Enter news.crcom.net for the News (NNTP) server. Make sure "My News server requires me to log on" is NOT checked. Click Next.
  32. Verify the Internet news account name box reads "news.crcom.net". Click Next.
  33. Select No and click Next
  34. Select Finish
  35. When prompted, press Ok to restart your computer. Once restarted, your Windows 98 system will be set up to connect to the Internet through Crossroads Communications.
