M S Bike-a-thon a Big Success!
A big congratulations to all the BSARC hams who volunteered there time to see that the MS Bike-a-thon went as well as it did. The event will raise about $67,000 this year. The event began on Saturday, the 19th in Midland, at the Claydesta building and the course took the riders past Angel stadium, then south toward Garden City, up to Stanton, then west and south of Big Spring, coming up Rockhouse road and then onto the base and SWCID (or as one of the maps referred to it “The Institute of the Dead”. The second day took the riders from SWCID around FM 700 to the Gail Hwy past Lake JB Thomas and on into Snyder where food , music and massages were available (ask Jerry.)

We did have a couple of club members that rode in the Bike-a-thon.. Jerry “Lefty” Farmer ( KK5EM ) and José “Crash Test” Gonzales (KB5GXW.) If you have not already heard how they acquired these nicknames, you will have to ask either Jerry, José or Ron Briley (KC5HUS), who rode a support vehicle for Jerry and José.

A “big pat on the back” goes to Allen Nichols (KC5NHV) for being fearless leader for the 2nd day of the event. Everything went very smoothly (except maybe for the “crash site” incident” (You’ll have to ask Allen.) The members that participated are: Allen Nichols (KC5NHV), JL Stevens (N5INC), Bucky Garner (KB5DRZ), Chris Churchwell (KC5DFZ), Marc Lutrelle (KD5AJE), Jim LeMarr (KE5RC), Irene LeMarr (N5JZM), Jerri Farmer (KC5LFZ), Bob Rumpff (KC5TWW), Terry Rumpff (KC5TWR), Ron Briley (KC5HUS), and José Gonzales (KB5GXW.)

I would personally like to thank all of you who helped with the event. I know from the rider’s point of view how important ya’ll are to the event. And special thanks to Ron Briley (KC5HUS) for watching mine and Jerry’s back and picking me up and dusting me off on Saturday.

Ham Fam 97
“The Jerry & Larry Show”
The 3rd annual Ham Fam event will take place on Sunday, August 17th at the Stanton City Park starting about 2:30 PM. This will be an ice cream social type event so bring food and drinks to share. For directions or further details, contact Jerry Farmer (KK5EM) at 267-6093 or Larry Nix (N5TQU) at (915) 520-6371 between 6-9 PM. The talk in frequency will be 146.520 Simplex.

From the Prez....

Well, it's been another busy month for the BSARC! We just caught our breath after Field Day, and it was time for our club meeting. Then we rested almost a whole week until we helped out with the MS 150 Cactus & Crude Bike Tour. If you don't know how far 150 miles is just ask Jerry Farmer (KK5EM). He rode his bike all 150 miles, and lived to tell about it! He was accompanied for almost 30 of the miles by our own editor José Gonzales(KB5GXW). They both did a great job, and did better than any of the rest of us so give them a pat on the back! They also both earned some new nick-names, but "Lefty" Farmer and "Crash-Test" Gonzales made me promise not tell what they are, you'll have to ask them! I drove the "support truck" for Jerry and José on the first day of the tour from Midland to Big Spring, if you've never observed an event like that from an "up-close and personal" perspective you should do it some time. I know that I felt like I had accomplished something when our guys had achieved their goals, and I think we all felt the pride Jerry felt both days when he crossed that finish line. Good job! To all who helped out.
